Monotheistic Baggage

Most of the world is dominated by at least one form of monotheism. So when a person decides to shed that life and become a polytheist, there are a lot of hangups left from that upbringing in a monotheistic household–even if one wasn’t even raised strictly as a certain monotheistic religion. These beliefs range from prayer habits to approaches to the gods themselves. And while these methods are normal in a monotheistic culture, they are foreign in that of polytheistic ones. Luckily, there is scholarship out there that describes polytheistic cultures of the Celts, the Egyptians, the Romans, etc. Using those sources–for which ever one is most appropriate–can help guide the modern polytheist.

Articles about Polytheism vs. Monotheism:

  • things monotheism taught me” by Sian. They present a great list of things that are present in the monotheistic perspective, but absent in a polytheistic one.
  • Unpacking Our Monotheist Baggage” by Brennos. As the title says, the author unpacks some of monotheist baggage they see in polytheist communities.
